 Which came first, a Planned Gift or the nonprofit’s Planned Giving Program?  Whether a specific program with staff and goals, or informal and integrated into an agencies annual efforts, it is important for each nonprofit to plan their Planned Giving Program. This session will discuss the basics to start a planned giving program at your nonprofit with seasoned professional Laura McDonald, CFRE, guiding the discussion and answering your questions on the how to’s and why’s of starting a Planned Giving Program.

* This pre-luncheon session is recommended for those new to planned giving or the concepts for the luncheon presentation to attend this pre-luncheon workshop.

 Laura J. MacDonald is the President of Benefactor Group and a certified fundraising executive with more than 24 years’ experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, and philanthropy. She has served as the vice president and creative director of a national fundraising firm, chief development officer in arts and higher education, and as a key volunteer for community organizations.

The Empire Strikes Back or a New Hope”

With the advent of advanced computation and “big data”, metrics of fund raising activities are prevalent throughout all types of organizations.  When it comes to measuring the effectiveness of a gift planning program, what are the best measures? When it comes to measuring the effectiveness of blended gifts, what are the best measures?  Although not all “planned” gifts are deferred, much of the work of individual gift planners will pay off in the future—often after the original fundraiser has left the organization and the donor relationship and stewardship of the commitment have changed hands, perhaps several times. PPP’s Metrics Task Force is examining best approach to setting goals and measuring performance for fundraisers charged with developing blended gifts, bequests, charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities, and other gifts that have a future impact on the bottom line. In this session, task force chair Joe Bull reports on connections between metrics and fundraising success and updating the Task Force’s progress.

Joseph O. Bull is the Executive Director of Gift Planning at Carnegie Mellon University. With over 31 years of experience in the philanthropic arena, he has been actively involved in assisting benefactors create 5 eight-figure gifts and dozens of seven-figure gifts.  Bull has also served as Senior Vice President for Community Engagement at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, leading the Zoo’s philanthropy, corporate partnerships, communications, membership, marketing, and group sales functions.  Previously, he was affiliated with the Worldwide Office of The Nature Conservancy as Interim Director of Philanthropy for Strategic Gifts and as Senior Philanthropy Officer for Global Priorities.  Bull also provided 16 years of service to his alma mater, The Ohio State University. For 13 of those years, he served as the university’s Director of Planned Giving where planned gifts accounted for 18% of a $1.23 billion campaign.  He began his career as Assistant Director of Planned Giving at Duke University and as Director of Gift Planning and Assistant University Counsel at North Carolina State University.  Bull was the 2005 Chair of the Board of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (a 10,000 member professional association) and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Council on Gift Annuities. Additionally, he was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the national newsletter Planned Giving Today for 15 years as well as a member of the Editorial Board of the web-based Planned Giving Design Center.  Bull has served as a faculty member for the College of William and Mary’s National Planned Giving Institute. He is past President of the Central Ohio and North Carolina Planned Giving Councils.  He is admitted to the Ohio and North Carolina bars.
