The Ohio Attorney General Office’s Role in Charitable Giving

PRESENTER:
Abigail (Abby) Jacobs, J.D.
Principal Assistant Attorney General, Ohio Attorney General’s Office

Charities fulfill a critical role in Ohio, meeting needs that the market and the government cannot or will not. The Attorney General has the privilege of being the state officer charged with protecting and regulating the charitable sector, a role which affords him the opportunity to support such a wonderful segment of Ohio’s civil society.

Join us to learn more from Abigail Jacobs, an attorney in the Attorney General Charitable Law Section. She will give a broad overview of the section’s duties in the charitable section and requirements for charities, attorneys, and financial advisors who work in the charitable realm. A few topics will include probate charitable matters and modifications of institutional funds.

Abigail (Abby) Jacobs is currently a Principal Assistant Attorney General in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. She received her undergraduate degree from Wooster College in 2008 and her law degree from Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law in 2011. Abby joined the Ohio Attorney General’s Office in 2012 and currently focuses her work on nonprofit and hospital transactions and mergers and probate matters. She is a leading expert in the section on charitable registration issues and how they intersect with IRS provisions affecting exempt organizations. In addition, Abby frequently provides training to charitable organizations about board governance and fiduciary duties and serves as one of the section’s public records attorneys. She is admitted to the Ohio bar.
