The Planned Giving Study: New Insights from Data on Planned Gifts

This session presents findings and recommendations from “The Planned Giving Study,” a multi-phase research study commissioned by the presenter and researched by Indiana University.  It provides important new insights about actual donors of actual planned gifts and offers helpful recommendations for planned giving programs.

An in-depth analysis of legacy society membership data has been conducted, and explored the following questions:

• What are the characteristics of legacy society members?  Are there changes in membership profiles over time?
• Who changed, or canceled, their planned gifts after they joined the legacy society?
• How do age, ethnicity, gender, family structure, and location influence bequest donor behavior?
• What types of planned giving vehicles and instruments did these members choose?
• How much did members give or plan to give through their planned gifts?
• Which types of programs received their planned gifts support?

Joe has 31 years of experience in the philanthropic arena, previously serving The Ohio State University, Duke University, North Carolina State University, The Nature Conservancy and the Columbus Zoo. Joe was the 2015 chair of the board of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning and currently serves on the board of directors of the American Council on Gift Annuities.

Women in Philanthropy

The unequivocal truth is that women are changing the face of philanthropy.  More and more philanthropic decisions are being made by women, who now control more than half of the wealth in the United States – with that percentage projected to rise dramatically over the next several decades.  At the same time, exciting new research shows that women are more philanthropic than men and that women donors think and act differently than their male counterparts.

This session will explain the historic wealth transfer to women, document the generosity of women, analyze how women philanthropists think differently than men, and present strategies for working with women donors.

Claudine A. Donikian, JD, MBA, is the resident/CEO and chief marketing officer of Pentera, Inc., and is regarded as one of the foremost experts in planned giving marketing. She is a sought-after speaker on the national planned giving and AFP circuits and writes and conducts training modules for Pentera training seminars. As Pentera’s chief marketing officer, she is the editor-in-chief for client marketing content and personally consults with a select group of Pentera’s clients on their marketing strategy and execution. One of Claudine’s professional areas of expertise is women in philanthropy, and she serves as a member of the advisory board for the prestigious Women’s Philanthropy Institute at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and as a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (CGP).
