Best Practices for Charities in Managing Receipt of Testamentary Gifts

Receipt of bequests and other deferred gifts are the basis of a charity’s successful planned gift program.  Complications may arise, as newly appointed Executors and Successor Trustees are unacquainted with probate and trust administration and are unfamiliar with the due diligence that charities follow in accepting testamentary gifts.  In the role of trust and estate administrator for The Ohio State University, Danette Golis-Variano has developed some practices that may be useful for other charities.  Although every testamentary situation is different, a basic framework may be followed to ensure a charity is being fiscally responsible, while also conveying kindness and appreciation for these very important gifts.

Danette Golis-Variano is the Assistant Director, Estate and Gift Planning, for The Ohio State University, and has held the position since 2015.  She held a similar position at The University of Arizona Foundation.  Her role as trust and estate administrator for OSU involves coordinating receipt of testamentary gifts from trusts, estates, and third-party vendors, including life insurance and wealth management companies.
